St. John’s College, Anchal is one of the higher education institutions of the Major Archdiocese of Trivandrum in the Malankara Syrian Catholic Church. The college is located in the District of Kollam at the base of the Western Ghats in Kerala, South India. It is established and administered by the Major Archdiocese of Trivandrum in accordance with the rights of the minority community guaranteed by the Constitution of India. This esteemed centre of learning is the outgrowth of the vision and farsightedness of late Archbishop Benedict Mar Gregorios and currently flourishing under the patronage of Major Archbishop His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos, the Father and Head of Malankara Syrian Catholic Church and the Major Archbishop of Trivandrum.

The annals of Indian History testifies to the fact that 15 years before the Independence of India, a great liberation took place in the spiritual life of South India, particularly among the Christians. It was the great Reunion Movement worked out by the great architect- the Servant of God Mar Ivanios, the late Archbishop. It was a period of uncertainty, fight, bickering and fearful servility all over India. A pall of gloom under a foreign yoke was brooding over the chaotic atmosphere of India. It was at this time Mar Ivanios, the Servant of God, decided to make the movement a beacon of light to India. Realizing that “thamasoma Jyothirgamaya” is the kernel of Indian thinking, he felt that the power of the Word of God is in driving out darkness and instill a new spirit for the reconstruction of India.

The College management is very particular in maintaining the quality of education. It strives for providing state-of – art facility, recruit best faculty and provide periodic training to its personnel.

The bunch of medical and Para-medical institutions including Medical College and Dental College at Pushpagiri, Mar Ephrem College of Engineering Marthandom, Pazhassi Raja College, Pulpally and hundreds of educational institution run by the Dioceses and Religious Congregations are of the Malankara Syrian Catholic Church. Thus to train persons for this he laid the foundation of Mar Ivanios College at the present Mar Ivanios Vidyanagar, Nalanchira and a host of educational institutions. St.Mary’s Higher Secondary School, which is considered to be the biggest school in Asia where largest number of students study under the same roof, also took its roots in this era.

Later when his predecessor, Late Archbishop Mar Gregorios took the helm of affairs, his Grace established St. John’s College at Anchal, Mar Theophilos Training College, Nalanchira, Sarvodaya ICSE and CBSE Schools at Trivandrum and St. John’s Higher Secondary School at Mar Ivanios Vidyanagar. As a great stride of progress, Anchal was again blessed by His Grace with the foundation of St. Joseph Nursing School, St. Joseph Nursing College and a CBSE School- St. John’s School. His Grace also gave guidance to the establishment of St. Goretti Higher Secondary School at Nalanchira and to a cluster of educational institutions from pre primary schools to higher secondary schools and medical and engineering professional training centres.

His Beatitude Cyril Mar Baselios, who succeeded His Grace Mar Gregorios, enlarged the infrastructural facilities of the educational institutions and got accredited all the colleges by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council). Mar Baselios College of Engineering Technology, Mar Ivanios Nagar and Mar Baselios Institute of Technology, Anchal emerged during this time. The church, thus, provides and takes care of the future of our country in the field of education, medical care and medical education par excellence. We thank almighty and pray to the Servant of God Mar Ivanios to surmount all difficulties and to march forward with zest in the coming years.
