Department of Malayalam

   The Department of Malayalam was started in the year 1964 and in 1967, B.A. Degree Course in Malayalam was started. Rev. Fr. Daniel Ayyaneth was the Head of the Department at the time. Dr. P.M. Joseph had been handling Sanskrit at that time. He was also the first to acquire a PhD Degree among the Malayalam Department Professors of St. John’s College. His celebrated work ‘Adapted Work in Malayalam Language’ is still being counted as a seminal book in the study of Malayalam Linguistics. The Department of faculty that time were Mr. Sam Panamkunnel (Prof C.O. Samuel), Prof. (Mrs.) Thresiakutty Mathews, Rev.Fr. Oommen Ayyaneth, Prof. P.X. Thomas and Prof. C.K. Mathai.

    Ranks and high percentage of marks in the University Examinations are a regular feature of this Department. Some of the great alumni of the Department are adorning the key and vital positions in the academic, judicial, civil and political streams of Kerala.

    After sixteen long years of service as the Head of the Department of Malayalam, Rev. Fr. Daniel Ayyaneth was promoted as the Principal of this College. For the next twenty years, Prof. C.O. Samuel served as the HOD. He was a man of social action. For twenty two years, he served the people of Alayamon, as a member of the Panchayat, and for fifteen years as its President. He was also the Chairman of the YMCA in the district and the State. He also adorned the throne of the District Governor of the Y’s Men’s International. After his retirement, Prof. (Mrs.) Thresiakutty was the HOD. Subsequently, Mrs. Achamma George became the Head of the Department for a period of 8 years.

    The next HOD of the Malayalam Department was Dr. C. Stephen. He was the Chairman of the Syllabus Committee of the CBCSS program of the University of Kerala. During his stewardship as HOD of the Department, Mrs. Mary M. Abraham and Rev. Fr. Johnson G joined as faculty members in the department. It was during this period, the Department Of Malayalam of this College conducted a National Seminar on ‘Post Modern Trends in Malayalam Literature’ in the December 2005. Later, Dr. C. Stephen was transferred to Mar Ivanios College, Trivandrum and Mrs. Annamma A took charge as the Head of the Malayalam Department.

During her headship. Mrs. Deepa Mary Joseph, Mrs. Sonu L Johnson and Mr. Mathew M. Varghese joined the Department as faculty members. It was also during this time that Dr.Annamma and Dr. Mathew Varghese were awarded their doctoral degrees. Subsequently, Dr. Annamma was transferred to Mar Ivanios College, Trivandrum and Rev. Fr. Johnson G took over tha charge as the Head of the Department. The department was paralyzed with the shock of the sudden demise of Dr. Mathew Varghese in a car accident in August 2013. Dr.Mary M. Abraham was awarded her doctoral degree in November 2013. Mr. Vinod L and Mr. Shijo Varghese have joined the Department as faculty members in the end of 2013. Dr. Deepa Mary Joseph was awarded her doctoral degree in January 2015. Currently, Rev. Fr. Johnson G is pursuing his research.

The Malayalam Department of this College has been successfully conducting very various Seminars and Workshops over the years till date.
